Who wants to talk about my company online? No one!

Well, you’re wrong. So there!

Brand Ambassadors, hmmmmm……I know, sounds very pretentious. But they are the people who will talk about you. And who are these strange but wonderful persons? They fall into two tribes:

1. Your employees. Individuals inside your company who are genuinely passionate about what you do. The fakers are easy to spot – just ask them to volunteer on a Saturday and watch their Adam’s Apple.

2. Non-employees. Clients (you would hope!), associates and complete strangers who are also passionate about your products or services.

I don’t care if your company sells Ball Bearings – there is a community of Ball Bearing enthusiasts online who would just love to hear from you. Don’t believe me? Check it out, Man!

The whole wondrous world of Ball Bearings with lots of people wanting to talk, create, reach out, expand their network and express themselves. And… they are using social media tools as their platform of choice.

How do you create “Brand Ambassadors” for your company? For employees, it’s empowerment. Give your employees, who are passionate about their company and social media, full access to all necessary tools – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Blogger, YouTube etc. Get them some social media training – too overlooked in my opinion, just because you searched for a Beyoncé video on YouTube (yeah, you’ve done that) does not a social media marketer make. And develop a Social Media Strategy – “A plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim.”

The people you want to talk to are there. If you do the right things to build up your presence on Twitter and Facebook etc., you will have people talking to and about you. Read what they are saying. Read what they’re saying about others in your industry. Talk to these people. It’s that easy.

Assuming you’ve accepted the need to find and build Brand Ambassadors, it’s time to take action. Start by looking at your current feeds. Somewhere, there are people who have been talking to or about you in a positive light. It may have been days, weeks, even months, but re-engage with them.

If have no social media presence whatsoever NOW is the time to start. Invite your clients and associates to bring part of your relationship online and, more importantly, ask permission to become part of their network of online relationships. You will be astonished at the growth you see in a very short period of time.

People enjoy feeling special. They want to be a part of an organization that they like even if they aren’t directly involved. Reach out to these people. Acknowledge that their input has been helpful to you and you would like more of it. Let them know that you are aware of their opinions and beliefs and that you would like to grow the relationship even more.

Remember, it’s not what you say about yourself. It’s what others say about you and your company that hold the most weight. Take advantage of the potential with Brand Ambassadors. They can do more for your business than you even know.
